Understanding Progesterone
Progesterone
Before menopause, progesterone stops the lining of the uterus from growing if the egg is not fertilised and prepares the body to bleed during the period of menstruation.
During labour, progesterone rises considerably to help all the appropriate muscles relax and help the birthing.
During the time of the menopause, our progesterone levels usually begin to decline before our oestrogen levels, although not as fluctuating up and down like oestrogen , more like a steady decline. But, this is what causes Oestrogen dominance, when oestrogen is at a high level and progesterone is low, which causes even more uncomfortable symptoms for us to deal with.
Progesterone is created in the ovaries, corpus luteum, placenta, testes, adrenal glands.
Progesterone is a sleep-inducing hormone, anti-inflammatory, helps bone strength, Brain function, our Immune response, Insulin signalling, our menstrual cycle, nerve tissue, helps during pregnancy, helps respiration and our skin elasticity.
Our hormones all work together and levels change all the time.
We need to understand our hormones to understand ourselves and how we feel .
